Do a world a favor and stop smoking. Why? One
reason is something that people see so often in televisions from the
advertising of these deadly sticks: Cigarettes are dangerous to your health.
Time and time again, people simply neglect these words of advice, dismissing it
as something of unimportance when in fact, in the whole commercial these few
words are the only thing that matters. Smoking is dangerous to your health in
every way possible, indirectly or directly.
One cigarette may seem harmless enough because
what can a little stick of paper do to a full human body? You'd be surprised.
Cigarettes may seem small, expendable even,
but it has more or less 4000 chemicals packed into that one stick, that one
small stick of fleeting pleasure to your human body but the foundation of
torture for your lungs. Research says that there are approximately 600
ingredients in cigarettes and when burned, they create more than 7,000
chemicals. At least 69 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many
are poisonous. And that's just in one stick.
Imagine if you smoke approximately 5
cigarettes a day: you alone are smoking 20,000 chemicals, burning 35,000 more
chemicals and inhaling almost 345 cancerous and poisonous chemicals into your
system. That's just in one person, one day, 5 sticks.
But there isn't just one smoker existing in
the world but there are thousands, maybe even millions of these smokers. You do
the math, how much damage does this object called a cigarette do worldwide,
everyday?
People sometimes say that they are fine with
the damage. The only ones that are affected are themselves; the only ones who
will suffer are them, and that they are fine with the consequences just so they
could smoke those cigarettes that have become their addiction. As long as they
are not harming anyone else. They are wrong; if that's what you think, then you
are wrong.
There are researches that declare that more
damaged is brought upon second-hand smokers, those who inhale the smoke
indirectly due to exposure, than the smokers themselves. Technically, if you
are a smoker then you are unwillingly threatening the health of every
non-smoker people around you.
Not just that but can you imagine a factory? A
factory that pollutes a planet. That is what a cigarette does to your body, not
only that but each cigarette you smoke; you become a factory, an instrument for
pollution.
Pollutions is another real threat to the public’s health
environment. This ever-existing issue in the world today can branch out to more
problems in our environment such as global warming, acid rain and the
deterioration of the ozone layer, and will ultimately affect humanity in the
long run, if not solve immediately. Nitrogen oxides come from burning gasoline,
coal or other fossil fuels. Some of types of volatile organic compounds come
from factories
Nitrogen dioxide can also react
in the atmosphere to form ozone, acid rain which can harm plants and animals.
Tobacco and cigarette industries are some of the biggest in the word that
produce these harmful gasses.
To reiterate once more, cigarette
smoke contain over 4,000 chemicals including 43 known cancer-causing compound
and 400 other toxins. This includes nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide as well
as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic and DDT.
As a cigarette is smoked, the
amount of tar inhaled into the lungs increase and the last puff contains more
than twice as much as tar as the first puff. While carbon monoxide makes it
harder for red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body there’s Tar,
which is mixture of substances that together form a sticky mass in the lungs,
most of the chemicals inhaled in cigarette smoke stay in the lungs.
So as you can see, that small
stick? Not so very small. One cigarette is armful, thousands of cigarettes is a
recipe for mass destruction.
One might say that if they stop,
it won’t make much of a difference because they are only one person against
thousands of smokers still. But remember, one person that stops smoking, is a
thousand of chemicals not being exerted to the atmosphere. That makes the world
a better place, and that makes that person a healthy being to enjoy the world.
What a factory does to the
planet. A cigarette does to your body.
So if you can’t do the world a
favor, do yourself a favor: stop smoking.
